On Monday March 14, 2022, hundreds of Court users thronged Moyo Chief Magistrates Court for the Court's Open Day presided over by the Principal Judge, Hon. Justice Dr Flavian Zeija.
The Principal Judge who was flanked by the Chief Registrar, HW Sarah Langa Siu were received by the Court's Chief Magistrate, HW Ronald Kayizzi.
Hon. Justice Dr Zeija went on to thank members of the public for turning up in big numbers to give feedback to the Courts on the justice services they received. He urged the Judicial Officers to have an open-door policy as one of the ways to ease access to court services.
The Principal Judge emphasized the need for court users to always pay prescribed court fees in the bank, especially for bail refunds for easy repayment after their cases are concluded.
While responding to the issue of understaffing of judicial officers, the PJ promised recruitment of more judicial officers in the medium term. He also called upon the Inspectorate of Courts to have regional offices for easy monitoring and timely justice delivery.
The Arua Resident Judge, Hon. Justice Isah Serunkuma, emphasized disciplining Judicial Officers and support staff who are non-performers. He further noted the need for staff rotation, the need for a Chief Magistrates Court in Obongi District and appealed to the Judiciary administration to consider holding a Court Open Day at Arua High Court.
The Chief Registrar pointed out that part of the Judiciary's transformation agenda is to have services closer to the people through platforms such as open days. She emphasized zero tolerance to corruption and Judiciary's commitment to ensuring justice for all.
"Justice is not for sale, we have all got a role to play in having corrupt-free courts," she said.
Representatives from the different justice institutions and legal aid service providers presented reports about achievements, challenges, and recommendations for improved justice delivery. The justice actors had exhibition centres where members of the public freely sought advice.
The Chief Magistrate expressed his gratitude to the Principal Judge for gracing the occasion. The Deputy Registrar Arua High Court, HW Agwero Catherine, Resident District Commissioner, Obongi District, Mr Gore Collin, and Deputy Resident District Commissioner Moyo, Mr Oryem Kennedy, were in attendance.
The Court Open Day was coordinated by the Registry of Communications and Public Relations, as one of the ways sensitize members of the public about court processes and initiatives.
